Ingredients

1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

½ cup natural peanut butter (no added sugar)

½ cup plain, unsweetened protein powder

½ cup pitted dates, softened in warm water

2 tablespoons chia seeds

2 tablespoons ground flaxseed

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2–4 tablespoons unsweetened milk, as needed

1–2 tablespoons water, if needed to blend dates

Optional add-ins: 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder, a pinch of cinnamon, or 1–2 tablespoons unsweetened shredded coconut.

Instructions

1. Soften the dates

Soak pitted dates in warm water for 5–10 minutes if they are firm. Drain well and blend into a thick paste with a little water.

2. Mix the dry ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the oats, protein powder, chia seeds, and ground flaxseed.

3. Add the wet ingredients

Stir in the peanut butter, date paste, and vanilla. Add milk a tablespoon at a time until the mixture holds together when pressed.

4. Roll into balls

Roll into 16–20 small balls. If the mixture is sticky, refrigerate it for 10–15 minutes before rolling.

5. Chill and enjoy

Refrigerate for 30 minutes to help them firm up. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Easy ways to customize

Chocolate version

Add unsweetened cocoa powder for a chocolatey taste without adding sugar.

Nut-free version

Replace peanut butter with unsweetened sunflower seed butter, checking labels for school allergy rules.

Extra-fiber version

Add another tablespoon of ground flaxseed or chia seeds and a splash more milk if needed.

Tips for serving kids: Make smaller balls for younger children, and supervise eating. For toddlers, avoid serving whole round, firm balls because they can be a choking hazard; crumble or flatten the mixture into an age-appropriate soft texture. Check for peanut, seed, and milk allergies.

Storage: Keep refrigerated for up to 1 week, or freeze for up to 2–3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator before serving.

Enjoy these as a convenient, nourishing snack for busy days!
